Bilingual Volunteer - Korean
Community Resources and Services -

Description

The Howard County Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) is interested in a Korean-speaking volunteer to assist it with its work. OCP handles complaints between consumers and businesses, and between tenants and their landlords. OCP also provides education, presentations, and provides outreach to the community on these topics. The volunteer would provide verbal and written translations to help investigators communicate with consumers or business owners and represent OCP at in-person or virtual programming where Korean is necessary. This is an "on demand" volunteer opportunity to begin but can expand to regular "office hours" as the program expands. Excellent verbal and written skills in Korean is required for this position.

This position will require a background check.

Description

SHIP/SMP counselors conduct unbiased, confidential individual counseling sessions to assist clients in making their personal decisions related to Medicare. Topics may include Original Medicare (Parts A and B), Medicare prescription drug plans, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare supplemental plans, bills for Medicare covered services and Medicare Summary Notice concerns (including appeals). Counselors also screen for benefit programs related to Medicare and provide application assistance when appropriate. As needed, counselors provide referrals to other agencies. Counselors provide Medicare fraud education and assist in the recognition of possible fraud, error and abuse. Counseling is provided in person and on the phone.

Description

1. Attend Senior Planet "Assistant" Video Training


  • Watch the Senior Planet "assistant" video (1hr) prior to joining a trainer in class.



2. Classroom Assistance


  • Assist in Senior Planet classes, dedicating 90 minutes per class.

  • Provide one-on-one tech assistance to seniors at 50+ Centers, scheduling 30-minute appointments based on student availability.

  • Help students with questions related to their devices during individual appointments.

  • Encourage students to take 2-4 appointments per session, with a maximum commitment of 1-2 hours per week



3. Location Flexibility


  • Be open to traveling to various locations to assist seniors, promoting a broader reach of tech education.



4. Flyer Creation


  • Design flyers for upcoming Senior Planet classes, dedicating 1-2 hours per week to this task.


5. Tech Support Group Meeting


  • Assist with monthly "tech support group" meetings, contributing valuable insights and support for attendees. This involves a commitment of 1 hour per month.


6. Content Creation


  • Work on video and/or infographic creation/editing for tech education content, contributing to the development of engaging and informative materials.
